FTTLG: Jamie MacDonald on being a language and gender minority in Finland

Denise Wall

Comedian Jamie MacDonald joins Finland: Through the looking glass to share his experiences as a transgender person who transitioned in Finland and his reaction to the passage of new transgender laws.

MacDonald, who originally hails from Canada, told FTTLG that he applauds recent legal reforms that allow for individuals to self-identify as transgender. He also welcomed the elimination of the requirement for a years-long consideration period prescribed by medical personnel.

“An exploratory phase is going to happen anyway. But I think what's important is that the type of exploration isn't set by medical standards,” he added.

MacDonald said that while he was upset by the negativity that permeated public debate about the legal reform, he understands that many people are still ignorant about the subject of sexual and gender minorities. He added that it’s up to individuals to educate themselves on the issue.

“I think people kind of have to take an interest. I see people who really don't know anything, people think all kinds of different things about how people transition or why they do. And I know because I used to think those things too, until I found out the information that was real. So I understand why people aren't that well informed.”

The comedian told FTTLG that after transitioning he was surprised to discover the rigid gender norms associated with being a man, something he thought applied more to women.

“Before I thought that femininity was extremely narrow. And I thought that masculinity was this, wide thing, [a] wide sandbox you could play with. And then I got over to this side and went, oh no, there's another really narrow box here.”

He concluded by saying that normalisation is the best way to further advance the rights of transgender and sexual minorities in Finland.

“The thing that really needs to happen is normalisation. Even though we're a small group, it shouldn't be exceptional that we exist.”
