FTTLG: Joppe Quaedvlieg tackles the job search in Finland

Denise Wall

Why is it so difficult for foreign talent to find work in Finland? Spoiler alert: it’s not about perfecting your CV. “You can post your CV on the website of Talent Boost. If that would have worked, we would all have jobs, because there's plenty of places to put your CV,” says Netherlands-born Joppe Quaedvlieg.

The straight-talking descriptive communication coach says jobseekers may be missing the mark by focusing on what’s available, rather than spending more time understanding what they really want.

According to Quaedvlieg, despite research by various government bodies and researchers indicating a need for foreign talent in the workforce, employers are not taking action based on those findings.

“What is happening? Why won't companies hire? It doesn't make any sense. You have companies that are not hiring, that still need people. And they are unwilling to change their approach,” he notes.

Finnish "reluctance" to make decisions

In conversation with host Denise Wall, Quaedvlieg also takes aim at Finnish working culture and what he perceives as a slowness to make decisions.

“There seems to be this reluctance to make decisions. Reluctance to make decisions based on numbers. Reluctance to make decisions based on logic. A lot of it seems to be, 'keep your head down and let's keep going the way we have. Let's not change it, it's good the way it is'.”

Joppe Quaedvlieg says he is willing to help jobseekers as well as corporate decision makers to focus on what they want and need by taking them through his descriptive communication technique. It’s an iterative process that helps participants zero in on what they want, plot a path to that outcome and take action to make it happen. Find out more about Quaedvlieg from his LinkedIn profile.
