FTTLG: Travis Glossop on the trials of starting over in Finland

Denise Wall

How do you find your way after seemingly going from the frying pan into the fire? When radio and podcast professional Travis Glossop left Britain for a new start in Finland, he thought he had escaped the problems that led to the UK’s pivotal vote to leave the EU. He arrived in Helsinki to find a nation riven by controversy and uncertainty as a new right-wing government pushed contentious policies.

Speaking on a special bonus episode of FTTLG, Glossop said he couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the atmosphere before Britain’s Brexit vote and pre-election Finland.

“There was a feeling of, well, there's no way that we're going to end up going that way. It can't, it just won't happen. We've had more positive international headlines re: Sanna Marin and all that sort of stuff in the last few years, and the happiest country in the world. And although that's a frivolous sort of headline click-baity sort of thing, there’s still background to it. People look favorably upon Finland, and you would go ’Well why would we choose to go backwards in time?’I felt the same thing when the Brexit vote was happening,” he added.

Finns don't want to take risks

Glossop told FTTLG that despite roughly a decade in the radio and podcasting arena under his belt, and surprisingly easy access to decision makers in Finland, making a breakthrough in the job market had been difficult. “I think what Finns have…shown me is there's almost an element of not wanting to take a risk, which I've found really disheartening,” he noted.

Glossop, who is the audio producer for FTTLG, also produces the podcast “Can I Finnish?” which he co-hosts with comedian Inka Valima. The show is a cultural exchange between the Brit and the Finn and it explores themes such as kids’ tv, national delicacies and even party etiquette. You can find “Can I Finnish?” on most podcast aggregator apps.
